The Heart of the Paddock

Walk through the MotoGP on a race weekend, and you’ll find a bustling, high-tech world. The ‘paddock’ is the nerve centre of the sport, the off-track area where giant team trucks are lined up, riders prepare in their motorhomes, and engineers stare intently at data screens. It’s a place of immense pressure and cutting-edge technology.

Amidst the corporate giants and factory powerhouses, some teams just feel different. They have a soul. Gresini Racing is one of those teams. With their striking light-blue bikes and a story of resilience that would move anyone, they are the undisputed family team of the MotoGP grid.

Born from a Champion’s Dream

To understand Gresini, you must first know its founder, the late, great Fausto Gresini. Fausto wasn’t just a team owner; he was a racer to his core, a two-time 125cc World Champion in the 1980s. He lived and breathed motorcycle racing, and in 1997, he poured that passion into creating his own team.

For decades, Fausto’s team was a respected force across all Grand Prix classes, known for spotting and nurturing incredible young talent. He had an eye for future champions, and his team became a place where riders could learn, grow, and often achieve their first taste of glory. The team was his life’s work and his extended family.

A Legacy Continued with Courage

In early 2021, the MotoGP world was left heartbroken by the passing of Fausto Gresini. The loss of such a beloved figure left a huge void, and many wondered what would become of the team he had built. The answer came from within his own family.

Fausto’s wife, Nadia Padovani, stepped up to take over as Team Principal. In a sport largely dominated by men, Nadia’s decision was one of immense courage and determination. She vowed to continue Fausto’s dream, not just to keep the team alive, but to make it thrive in his honour. She is now the first-ever female Team Principal to win a MotoGP race, a testament to her incredible leadership and the team’s fighting spirit.

The Giant-Killing Satellite Team

Gresini Racing operates as a ‘satellite team’ for Ducati. This means they don’t build their own motorcycle from scratch like a ‘factory team’ (such as the main Ducati or Yamaha squads). Instead, they lease incredibly competitive machinery from a manufacturer, in this case, Ducati.

While some might see satellite teams as second-tier, Gresini consistently proves that theory wrong. They receive enormous support from Ducati but maintain their own unique identity and way of working. This structure allows them to be agile and focused, often leading to ‘giant-killer’ performances where they out-race the official factory bikes with supposedly superior equipment. Their first victory as a Ducati satellite in 2022 was one of the most emotional moments in recent MotoGP history.

Meet the Riders

For 2025, Gresini fields an exciting all-Spanish lineup. On one side of the garage is Alex Marquez (#73), a former Moto2 and Moto3 World Champion. He brings valuable experience and a calm head to the team, and has already proven he can win races on their bike.

His teammate is one of the sport’s most talked-about rising stars, Fermin Aldeguer (#54). Stepping up to the premier class, Aldeguer is known for his blistering speed and raw talent, and many are eager to see what he can do on a MotoGP machine.

This creates a fascinating family dynamic. Alex’s older brother is none other than the legendary Marc Marquez, who races for the factory Ducati team. It means the two brothers are now rivals on similar machinery, adding a wonderful personal storyline to their on-track battles.

A Splash of Colour, A Ton of Heart

You can’t miss the Gresini bikes. Their distinctive, vibrant light-blue ‘livery’ (the paint scheme and sponsor logos on the bike) makes them stand out from the sea of reds, blacks, and oranges on the grid. It’s a fresh, modern look that perfectly matches the team’s energetic and approachable philosophy.

This philosophy is built on passion, not just corporate objectives. They are a true racing family, where every mechanic, engineer, and staff member shares in the highs and lows. It’s this human element, this visible heart-on-sleeve approach, that has made them a firm favourite with fans around the world.

They prove that in a world of billion-dollar budgets and ruthless competition, there is still a place for a team run with love, grit, and the enduring spirit of its founder.
